We hiked Muhambura in Volcanos, did Chimpanzee Trekking, two hikes in Nyungwe and a boat trip on Lake Kivu. All activities were coordinated well for us and we really enjoyed all of them. Only on the boat ride we felt a bit uncomfortable with the external guide (not from New Horizon).

Our driver guide Theo took care of us really well and was super friendly. He happily shared some information on the areas we drove through, but he also let us rest and chill in the car without always talking. We felt really comfortable with him.

I felt very safe the entire trip as a solo traveller and my first time visiting East Africa.

Zacc was an incredible guide, very relaxed and calm to be around, shared a lot of knowledge, and was a very very cautious driver on the sometimes chaotic roads. I also very much appreciated him finding good coffee each day for quick stops and my regular bathroom breaks!

The itinerary was great, with the highlights being visiting both Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Bwindi Impenetrable Park in Uganda (where I did the gorilla trekking), and importantly visiting the Genocide Memorial in Kigali, hearing from the survivors, and the ongoing impacts was an absolute privilege and must do.

Being impacted by an unexpected flight change, I essentially missed the first day, however the team quickly reorganised for the next morning so I did it have to miss anything – this was very much appreciated.

I would absolutely recommend New Horizon Africa Safaris, and would not hesitate to use again for my next trip.

Waited for me to finish the Bisoke Hike and took me… read more to very nice restaurant for lunch. Then we went to Lake Kivu where we did a boat ride and a Kayak ride. It was overall a positive experience. Some recommendations for future : 1- provide guests with a weather forecast to help planning the hike. The weather conditions changed despite a dry season there was rain the day before which caused the hike to have a lot of mud , slowed us down and when we went to the top the fog was so strong that we couldn’t see much. Also many guests may not know and be prepared with the right gear / clothes, it is important to wear layers and have very sturdy boots as the mud can make your shows a roller coaster and you will begin sliding/rather skiing while going down which can be dangerous ( luckily porters can help carrying your stuff but you have to pay them which is fine as it is a small amount 10 -20$). It is also essential to know that there is a stingy plant all around the hike route and you need to wear a pant of a water proof material as you can easily scratch your legs or knees as you walk through the hike trail. Obviously the change in weather is something we can control but One recommendation is to may be provide a list of things to guests to take note off once they book the trip so they are aware and prepared. They did a fantastic job from the airport pickup all the way through the entire tour. We stayed in Kigali, so we had an early morning pickup and drove through the scenic mountain roads to Volcanoes National Park in time for the morning briefing.

The Golden Monkey trek itself was less than an hour, as the monkeys had moved to lower ground. It was a marvelous experience to see so many monkeys in their natural habitat. We got to spend one full hour observing their playful and mischievous behavior. We were told the group we visited had about 100 monkeys.

Our driver was knowledgeable and friendly. On the way back, he kindly took us to visit the Inema Arts Center (also known as Donna Fabrie Center), an art and craft center where local women make beautiful handmade items. He also made a stop at the Genocide Memorial in Kigali, which was a deeply moving experience.

I highly recommend New Horizon Africa Safari for anyone looking to explore Rwanda and enjoy a well-organized, memorable adventure.

In fact, I think I got a few extra meals and, of course, they took exceptional care of me (a single traveller) right from the start! New Horizon accompanied my trip from my arrival in Kigali to my return to São Paulo (Brazil), always attentive and kind. I went to Rwanda to take part in a conference in Kigali. Apart from the gorillas, I didn’t know anything else about what to see in Rwanda. Still in Brazil, where I live, I got in touch with New Horizon (a recommendation from the hotel I had booked in Kigali). From my initial contact with New Horizon, they understood what I wanted, made suggestions and finally organised my route. Before travelling to Rwanda, I received information about the itinerary, timetables, prices, etc. I paid a small amount before travelling and the final amount at the start of the trip in Rwanda. Among the many wonders of Rwanda, my itinerary included two days biking on the Congo Nile Trial Rubavu-Kinunu, two days hiking from Kinunu to Karongi, always with beautiful views of Lake Kivu, and then two days resting in a hotel on the shores of Lake Kivu, in Karongi. To get to Rubavu, where the trail starts, I was picked up from my hotel in Kigali and had a comfortable journey to Rubavu. En route I visited the Ikirenga Cultural Centre and Ellen DeGeneres Campus of Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (I highly recommend it), with Lunch at La Paillotte Kinigi. In Ribavu, we went on an evening boat ride on Lake Kivu, which was great for getting used to the adventure I was about to embark. On the following day, Valentin, the guide who accompanied me on the four-day Congo Nile Trial, picked me up at the Musanto Hotel (Ribavu) to start the trial. Valentin is a professional and excellent guide. He was always attentive, cheerful and ready to chat and tell me about the places we visited. I was impressed by Valentin’s knowledge of the region. Most of the trail passes through places that can be reached by bike or on foot. Over the four days, we travelled through many Rwandan rural hill villages and plantations. All the accommodation was great, the rooms always very clean and cosy, the food delicious. I was very well received at all the base camps (Cyimbiri Guest House, Kinunu Base Camp, Bumba Base Camp). On the last day, we arrived at the Bethany Hotel. I didn’t have the physical fitness needed to do the trail, to bike and hike on a terrain of dirt and sometimes stone and full of hills. Physical fitness is important, but you don’t need to be a professional athlete to experience the Congo Nile Trial. Valentin kept pace with me, when the slope was steep, we got off the bike and he accompanied me on foot, always gentle. And so, we followed the trail, chatting and feeling the landscape and the people we met along the way. At no point I felt insecure being in an isolated place with only Valentin and the locals, on the contrary, I felt safe and protected. It’s impressive to visit a country, where most people live in rural areas, that is so well organised, clean and friendly.

The highlight was obviously the gorilla trekking, but unforgettable moments we had by the encounter with the chimps, during the two days Congo Nile trail trekking, the camping nights in both Bishayu island (lake kivu) and in Burera lake (the one of the twins) but also climbing Bisoke volcano (hard but amazing)
